INFORMATION UPDATE: FEBRUARY, 2001

cologne.jpg (21620 bytes) SYMPOSIUM HISTORY - Cologne, Germany

In January, 2001 the IOC (International Olympic Committee) recognized the important connection between Dentistry and Sport by establishing a Working Group on Dentistry within the IOC Medical Commission. This Working Group has a number of responsibilities, including the development of the Dental Service for upcoming Olympic Games. As well, this group is involved with the education of athletes, coaches, sport federations and national Olympic committees about the importance of dental conditions

to both overall health and possibly athletic performance. The value of mouthguards in preventing injuries in high contact sports is also communicated to these groups.

As part of the educational mandate, the IOC Medical Commission – Working Group "Dentistry" is pleased to endorse and support the First International Symposium on Dentistry and Sport. Through meetings like this, it is hoped that dentists and other health care professionals can share information that will create a greater number of dentists trained to deal with the specific needs of high performance athletes.

The First International Symposium of Dentistry and Sport will feature speakers from Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, USA, Austria, France, Switzerland, Spain and many other countries. The official language of the Symposium will be English, but transcripts of the presentations in other languages will be available.

SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS – FRIDAY, MAY 4

The opening day of the Symposium will commence with greetings from both the IOC and IIHF. The first session will feature 4 international speakers discussing the highly successful 1999 Pan-Am Games dental service; the pre-Olympic dental program of both the USA Soccer teams and the German Field Hockey teams; and a proposed dental injury reporting system that has been successfully used for many years to track injuries in North American professional Ice Hockey.

The second session of the morning will feature an in-depth review of some key areas of dental traumatology. New methods of storage of avulsed or severely dislocated teeth will be discussed, and current concepts in the splinting of traumatized teeth will be reviewed. The morning will end with a talk on the management of dental trauma in the paediatric patient.

The luncheon on Friday will feature a keynote speaker – Dr. Rene Fasel –who is President of the International Ice Hockey Federation as well as a member of the IOC. As a Dentist, Dr. Fasel will discuss the important links currently being developed between Dentistry and Sport.

The afternoon session will continue the Olympic Theme as presentations will be made describing the Dental Service available at both the recent and previous Olympic Games. The dental health of high performance athletes and the activities of the new IOC Medical Commission – Working Group "Dentistry" will be featured. As well, the items of importance to Dentists in the IOC Banned or Restricted Substances list will be reviewed.

Friday’s scientific session will conclude with a number of presentations outlining new research in mouthguard design and fabrication and how this may relate to athlete performance. Such issues and oxygen uptake, new mouthguard materials and possible reduction of jaw fractures and concussion by using mouthguards will be discussed.

The evening will conclude with a cocktail party and a second round match of the World Championship of Ice Hockey.

SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS – SATURDAY, MAY 5

Saturday’s session will commence with a session presented by one of the top international experts in Sports Dentistry, Dr. Ray Padilla. Dr. Padilla has lectured and written extensively on all aspects of Sports Dentistry, and is the founder of the website www.sportsdentistry.com. Dr. Padilla will lead a keynote session on current concepts of mouthguard design and pressure lamination.

Three leading sport medicine specialists will conclude the morning session with a series of talks on current developments on antibiotic and analgesic use for the Sports Dentist; the diagnosis and management of concussion: and the treatment of soft tissue trauma to the orofacial region.

Following lunch, the entire afternoon will be devoted to current research and developments in Sports Dentistry. Sessions will feature a discussion on new methods and materials for mouthguard fabrication as well as the link between occlusion and athletic performance. International researchers will be given the opportunity to present papers outlining their findings and developments. And, an expert panel will bring together all of the sessions and provide an opportunity for questions, comments or discussion.

Saturday’s scientific session will finish in time to allow participants to attend either the early (16:00) or late (20:00) game of the World Championship.

HANDS-ON MOUTHGUARD FABRICATION COURSE

On the morning of May 6, the Symposium will feature a limited attendance hands-on course to allow participants to learn about and to fabricate pressure laminated mouthguards. This course will be presented by Dr. Ray Padilla, one of the leading speakers on Sports Dentistry. He will be assisted by a number of the speakers participating in the Symposium.

Participants in the course will learn about the various materials and designs that can be used in the fabrication of pressure laminated mouthguards. Every participant will have the opportunity to work with the different materials and will be taken through all of the stages of mouthguard fabrication from proper impression techniques to final finishing and polishing of the completed mouthguard.

The hands-on course is sponsored by Dreve-Dentamid, and will feature the best pressure lamination devices currently available. Other devices that can be fabricated with these machines (bleaching trays, night guards, bridge splints) will also be discussed.

Due to the hands-on nature of this course, attendance will be limited and will require a separate registration. If you are interested in participating in this exciting course, be sure to register well in advance.
