Courses in Dental Traumatology
for dentists, dental auxiliaries and interested lay groups
Frances M. Andreasen, DDS, dr. odont., Specialist Consultant in Dental Trauma, Vesterbrogade 72 (3.), DK-1620 Copenhagen V, Denmark, tel/fax (+45) 3322 6622 E-mail: francesbluetooth@mail.dk

Dr. Andreasen has lectured to dentists, dental auxiliaries and interested lay groups on correct first aid and follow-up procedures following acute dental injuries. Courses can be in the form of slide presentations and/or

group discussion. In the latter, course participants can present their own cases either that are now giving diagnostic and/or treatment problems - what to do now and in the future - or problems from the past - what went wrong.

Dental trauma happens when we least expect it. The patients often present in the dental clinic while the dentist is busy treating other patients. And it is then the dental auxiliaries who have the responsibility of receiving these patients, calming them down and forming a preliminary overview of the situation. Lectures for dental auxiliaries therefore emphasize correct procedures for receiving the trauma patient at the dental clinic prior to the patient's first meeting with the treating dentist.

It has been shown that the earlier a dental injury is treated (for example, putting knocked out teeth back in the jaw), the better are the healing results. That means, the closer to the injury site the accident victim is seen and given first aid, the better the healing. In some countries, there are lay groups with special interest in providing correct first aid at, for example at sports events. Lectures will therefore provide a background for correct first aid and advice.
